About Us
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization
that provides housing for low-income families with a
need for decent housing. Habitat is here to help
fight the war against poverty.
Our first house was built in 1998 and since then ten
other homes have been built in Defiance County. Two
in Hicksville, one in Sherwood and seven in
Defiance.
Each family that is chosen to purchase a Habitat
home, must be willing to partner with Habitat and
complete sweat equity hours. Sweat equity is the
physical labor that each family puts into their
home. Every partner family must also complete a
homeowner education class, this also goes towards
their sweat equity hours. Sweat equity hours can be
fulfilled by family members and friends.
After the family completes their sweat equity hours,
classes and they finish building their home, the
partner family buys the Habitat house with a
no-interest loan from Habitat. The money they pay
each month goes into a revolving fund to build more
Habitat houses.
We offer
"a hand up, not a hand out"
to low-income families!
